Confession #7: I love my boss!

Maybe you’re fortunate in your professional life. I count myself in this category: I have a great job as an Instructional Coach which allows me the satisfaction of helping the teachers and students I work with. It’s a job where I’m always learning and feel like I’m making a difference for a lot of people. I also have a life partner who encourages my various interests and passions and my son who is cheering me on.

So, why did I decide to start my own business? Why be a Wellness Advocate, too? Because I care about the health and happiness of my son and my family. Because I care about the health and happiness of my friends. Because I want to empower them and I want to empower you with the knowledge of another way to live your life: running your own business, spending time with your children on your own terms. For me, for those who are close to me, for you, I want us not just to survive, but to thrive! I want to see you live the life you love!

Also, I wanted my son to have the example of a mother, his mother, who went after her dreams and created the life she loves. What better way to show him than to give him the example of his mother helping other people find life balance and create the lives they want while taking care of the health and wellbeing of their families! I wanted him to see me live my dreams, so that he would know he could live his dreams, too.

What is your why? When you’re working for someone else, you are working for their dream. Does it jive with your dream? Having a boss, reporting to someone also means that you are accountable to that person. Not only are you doing what you need to do to advance their dream, but then you’re also wondering what your boss is thinking about what you’re doing and how they are judging you. You’ve got a tape playing in the back of your mind observing what you are and how that’s being used to evaluate your performance. You’re doing your job, and you’re doing your supervisor’s job at the same time! No wonder you’re so tired. Self-judgement takes so much time and energy. It makes you feel tired.

For me, a big motivator and source of job satisfaction is knowing that I’m making a difference, that I have a sense of purpose. Well, in working for myself, I am making that difference for myself, for my family, and for those who choose to work with me. My purpose is to see us thrive. Lucky for me in my own business, my boss and I see things eye to eye. I never have to doubt her intentions, or wonder what she’s really thinking. She always appreciates and recognizes the hard work I do. She knows my concerns and tries to address them. She encourages me and believes in me. I definitely recommend her as a boss!

When you’re working for yourself and your dreams, you’re not just doing a J-O-B. You’re making a difference in the lives of the people dearest to you. You’re the one making the decisions. You’re the one who decides how much time you spend on your business and how much time you spend with your family. You’re the one who decides what your day will look like and what you will accomplish. There’s no one to judge you, and you are always in your own corner.

Lesson #7: Being your own boss is very liberating!
